Human Rights TourNational University Tour

The Human Rights Awareness Tour is a nationwide university tour starting in February, 2008, and continuing until December. We will stop at one or two universities every week to present a series of exciting events, including: at least one educational film or documentary; at least one professional human rights oriented speaker; an art and photography exhibit with live art; a Fair Trade Coffee Night, featuring fair trade products in addition to free organic coffee, acoustic music, and poetry readings; a No Sweat Fashion Show, sponsored by No Sweat Apparel and featuring sweatshop-free clothing; and a Human Rights Awareness Festival, featuring bands, motivational speakers, and cNo Sweat Logoultural performances.

The main goal with the Human Rights Awareness Tour is to educate students about the United Nations' Universal Declaration of Human Rights. The secondary goal of the tour is to act as a platform to promote the campaigns of non-profit organizations working in the field of Human Rights. The tour will also be raising awareness about the major human rights issues and violations occurring in the world today. If you would like to see if your organization fit’s the criterion to be promoted on our tour please e-mail tour coordinator John Corkery at jcorkery@humanrightstour.org.

Global Peace Container SchoolThe Human Rights Awareness Tour organization will be raising money for the Global Peace Containers, a non-profit organization helping to curb poverty worldwide. The money raised will be used to renew used ocean fairing shipping containers into sustainable and affordable schools, health clinics, community centers, and housing. Currently the GPC organization is working on bringing a shipping container home on the Human Rights Awareness Tour to help raise funding for the project.

Les NubiansGPC's goal to contribute to global peace is two-fold; by providing education assistance through the construction of new schools and community centers in areas of need, and to improve the economic conditions of such communities with shelter and medical facilities. Using recycled shipping containers allows GPC to build quickly at half the cost. By using containers as construction material, excess debris is kept out of landfills thus increasing the sustainability of forests and the greening of our planet. Sara Rahbar ArtThe strategy of the tour is to use the excitement created by live entertainment to accelerate the growth of the human rights movement. Popular bands, artists, models, speakers, poets, and films all have the ability to draw large groups of people especially when combined into a series of events. The Human Rights Awareness Tour seeks to use the press and publicity created by these groups to not only educate and raise awareness about human rights but also to motivate people everywhere to join the human rights movement. The main tour group will be traveling in a waste vegetable oil converted bus that recycles used frying oil from restaurants. The "Veggie Bus" itself is a traveling socially conscious statement promoting environmental sustainability and green ideology.

The very existence of these rights is a magnificent achievement that should be celebrated by all. It is time that human rights be made a worldwide household norm," states tour coordinator John R.
